The Fresh Air Fund is an independent, not-for-profit agency that provides free summer vacations to children living in New York City's disadvantaged communities. Nearly 4,000 children visit volunteer host families each summer in rural and suburban communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and in Canada.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Recruit, supervise and encourage volunteers to take on the individual activities of the
Friendly Town (Friendly Town Committee).
• Represent and communicate The Fresh Air Fund’s program and policies.
• Promote the Friendly Town Program within a specific geographic area.
• Recruit and select host families.
• Ensure the appropriateness of hosts and their expectations within the Friendly Town.
• Coordinate the invitation and matching process as it relates to the Friendly Town.
• Serve as liaison between The Fresh Air Fund office and hosts re: logistics, communicating
match information, transportation and policies.
• Monitor summer visits to ensure safety and well-being of children.
TIME COMMITMENT
• Minimum of one year. The Fresh Air Fund Friendly Town season runs from November 1 to October 31. The
Chairperson position is renewable annually in the fall at the discretion of the Fund
Representative.
• The busiest months for Chairpeople are April through June and during the weeks of the
Friendly Town summer trips. Availability during child visits in the summer and for spring
and fall Fund Rep area meetings is required.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Commitment to The Fresh Air Fund mission with an understanding of the program, policies,
and host experience.
• Ability and readiness to communicate regularly via letter, phone, answering machine, and/or
email.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Experience motivating and supervising adults.
• Skilled in problem-solving and crisis management.
• Knowledge of and insight into child development and behavior management.
• Enthusiasm, commitment, ability to work with others, and a willingness to learn.
